As a city dweller, I have become accustomed to tossing my garden trimmings into the green bin without much thought, comforted that they are destined to become compost. While looking at Anna Atkins cyanotype herbarium, I was struck by the respect and attention paid to each plant. Atkins was part of a continuum of research and discovery in a world that was expanding through exploration. Today, we are more preoccupied with a world that is diminishing through extinction and environmental degradation. Green Bin is my attempt to pay closer attention to the plants that pass through my little plot of land. Some of the images are photograms, like Atkins’, and all of them are chemigrams.
