I'd rather choose than be chosen for

    Hey friend,

Nobody wants to talk about sacrifice. The word sounds like loss, like going without, like the grim part of a good life.

But I really think it's the opposite.

Sacrifice is just choosing what matters more, on purpose, before something or someone else chooses for you.

"If you fail to sacrifice for what you care about, what you care about will be the sacrifice."

Everything you care about costs something to keep. You pay it in the small things you give up, over and over, for as long as you want to hold onto it. You don't get to opt out of the cost. You only get to choose how you pay it.

Pay it intentionally in small amounts now. Or have it taken from you all at once later.

    In your health:

The small sacrifices are obvious and boring. The training session. The earlier night. The second helping you leave on the plate. None of them feel like much in the moment, which is exactly why they're easy to skip.

Skip them long enough and your health stops being something you keep and becomes the thing you spend. The capable body. The good years. The freedom to do what you want without your body being the reason you can't.

    In your family:

The small sacrifices here are the phone away in the evening. Showing up when you said you would. Being a little bored on the living room floor because that's where your child is.

Skip them long enough and the people closest to you learn to need you a little less.

    In your work:

The small sacrifices are the plans you say "no" to so you can finish what you started. The work you redo because you know it isn't your best. The mundane, unglamorous behind-the-scenes work that keeps the project moving forward.

Skip them long enough and what you meant to build never gets built.

    The takeaway:

A good life is built out of what you're willing to give up for it.

So pick the thing. Name what it costs to keep. Then pay it in small, deliberate amounts, while the price is still small.

Whatever you won't sacrifice for, you've already started to lose. And whatever you're willing to sacrifice for, you get to keep.

Choose it. Pay for it gladly. And go enjoy the life it buys you.

    Until next time,

    Peter Tangel
